I bought this book for my favorite young contrarian, but I have not yet dared to deliver it. Anticipating a negative response (to almost any book…), I have a plan: I shall not give this book as a homework assignment. I’ll just tell what it is and leave it at that.
The book’s advice for young people is to think independently and to disagree vigorously without fear. It encourages truthfulness even when it means losing popularity, risking looking like a fool, and being repetitive and ‘boring’ when the topic matters.
Never to be a spectator to unfairness or stupidity.
This is valuable to anyone coming from a culture of collaborative politeness, and especially from one that gives priority to avoidance of shame.
This is a book I wish someone would have put in my hand when I was fifteen.
